It all began in 2013 when the founder of Matsmart noticed how loads of perfectly fine food was pointlessly thrown away. Back then it was only a simple e-business, some shelves, and orders packed late at night. Today it is an automated warehouse of 22,000 square metres.

Robots and solar panels
Matsmart’s climate-smart e-commerce warehouse in Örebro is the company’s single largest investment. Tens of thousands of tonnes of food and consumer products are rescued from the warehouse every year.
Up to 60% of the operation of the 22,000-square-metre warehouse is powered by solar panels. It has 10,000 pallet spaces and 14 loading platforms.
There are 149 robots available in the warehouse to support the co-workers, and the picking capacity is about 6,000 order lines per hour. The automation is built with the AutoStore system from Element Logic.
Except being a very pleasant city, Örebro is amazing for logistics. It has a strong position in e-commerce Sweden. Based on where our customers live, our warehouse is really well-situated. And it will be next to PostNord’s large terminal.
A successful relocation story
The initial contact was made in 2020 with a question from an anonymous company concerning the municipality’s preparedness in getting existing staff to move along in case of a relocation to Örebro.
In 2021, Matsmart was presented as the company to establish in Örebro. According to a survey, 60 co-workers had expressed an interest in moving along. A customized video based on the survey answers was produced to showcase life in the Örebro region. Together with housing companies, both municipal and privately-owned, we worked hard to meet the demand for apartments.
About 40 families have moved to the Örebro region in 2022.
